The Android Market is rapidly closing in on the 6 billion downloads mark. The Android Market is the Google store for selling Android applications and will seek to give tougher competition to the Apple iTunes App Store.
A research report by market analysis firm Ovum has already predicted the Android Market to overtake the Apple store for the first time with an estimated 500,000 new Android devices getting activated every day. The Research2Guidance report states that the Android Market will be crossing the 6 billion download mark in mid-September itself. The research has also found out that the weather apps generated more revenue compared to games.
The Android Market is still dominated by the free and ad-supported apps and the level of competition among games developers is so much that the individual revenue is less. The weather apps have enjoyed the maximum revenue because of less competition and all smartphone users download at least one weather app. Even the business tools segment generates large revenue since users were more ready to spend on apps that help them with business.
